FAQS About Adoptions Through the TLHS
How much do animals cost? Adoptions are reasonably priced at $60 for all animals. The adoption fee includes spay or neuter surgery,1st shot and deworming. Rabies shots will be the responsibility of the new adopter. In an effort to reduce the companion animal overpopulation in our area TLHS adopted a mandatory spay/neuter policy in Feb. 2007. This means that all animals adopted will have to be spayed or neutered before the adopter takes them home. Usually by the next day.
What are your adoption criteria? We generally prefer that persons adopting animals be 21 years of age. However, persons 18-20 may adopt animals if they live on their own. We require that adoptive families not be restricted from owning pets by any rental agreements and that they have adequate facilities for the type animal they are adopting. Lap dogs, or cats that have been declawed, may need to stay inside. Big, active dogs may need to be outside in a large yard. Beyond that, the individual must sign an adoption statement promising to meet the animal's basic physical needs, that the animal is for themselves and not a third party, and that they will not sell the dogs to an animal research facility.
Are there other places to see animals up for adoption besides the shelter or this website? Yes! Especially cats. The Tupelo PetsMart Store is gracious enough to allow us to adopt dogs and cats in their Luv-a-Pet Adoption Center. Because they are so easily litter trained, we are allowed to keep cats in the center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The PetsMart staff adopts them for us and allows TLHS to keep the entire adoption fee. Since dogs do not do well in small cages, TLHS is required to have volunteers on hand when they are present. This usually limits dog adoptions at PetsMart to Saturdays. We are typically there from late morning up until mid afternoon.
